What's the small detail that makes an old place feel inhabited to you?
Not the mosaics or the grand columns — I mean the bit that suddenly makes you feel someone actually stood there. For me it's always the threshold: the worn stone where a foot has gone in and out ten thousand times. What does that for you, in any old building?
