The dig site was underwater again
I'm standing in the trench and the rain is coming up from below instead of from the sky — the earth itself is sweating the water out. Every surface I touch turns to mud, and instead of pottery I'm pulling up coins that are still warm, like they were just dropped a minute ago. I know in the dream that none of it will survive the morning, and I don't even try to save it. I just stand there letting the water rise to my knees, and it feels like the right thing to do.

The coins still warm is the part I can't stop thinking about. My work is all about the last warmth leaving a body, and there's a particular rightness in standing there while the water takes it all back. You didn't try to save it because it was never yours to save.
