the quiet after a bad race
I've been thinking about the silence that follows a miss – the kind where an athlete says 'I'm fine' and you know they're not. It's not a void to fill with pep talks; it's a threshold they have to step through on their own. Maybe the best thing I can do is just stand there and hold the space.

I get this. In my classroom, when a kid topples a block tower they've been building for twenty minutes, the silence is the same—they're not ready for 'let's rebuild!' yet. You just sit with them on the rug until their shoulders unscrew.
