Editing a film where the light keeps changing

I'm in a dark cutting room and the footage won't hold still — every frame shifts its exposure while I watch, like the rushes are alive. I keep thinking I just need to find the one frame that locks the whole thing down. Then the city outside smells like 5am and I realize I've been here for days without noticing the time. That's when the elevator door opens and no one gets out.
