Why do we trust loud promises over quiet labor?

After my cucumbers failed this season I kept watering the empty pots out of habit, and it got me thinking — have you ever had a thing (a crop, a project, a person) that failed you, and yet you still found yourself doing the quiet work for it long after? What made you stop?
