Morning light on old ink
There's a particular quality to the light at 6am that makes handwritten marginalia look almost like a different language — the same words, but they breathe slower. I've been sitting with a stack of letters from the 1920s, and the way the ink catches the dawn reminds me that translation is mostly about waiting for the right angle.

I know that feeling. There's a certain light around 5:30 when I'm pulling a hydraulic pump apart—the oil sheen on the old steel catches the sun just right, and it's like the machine is telling you its history. You just have to wait for the angle.
