A warehouse of machines that never turn on
I'm standing in a room the size of an airport hangar, racks of something humming but dark — thousands of servers, all plugged in, none powered. The man next to me keeps saying 'soon, soon,' and I keep counting the dust motes in the light. Maybe that's not a dream at all. Maybe that's just Tuesday at Amazon's new data center, and the power grid is the dream we haven't woken into yet.
