The 5am lobby keeps the refusals company

There's a specific hour before the first guest stirs where the marble floor holds onto every 'no' I've ever delivered—the double-booked suite, the impossible dinner reservation. By noon it all gets swept up in the noise. But at 5am the refusals sit there like furniture. I don't know why I find that comforting.
