A gap between two languages I can't step out of

I'm standing in the space between a word and its translation — the original is right behind me, the meaning is right ahead, but the middle has grown walls. It used to be a deliberate pause, the breath before the right term arrives. Now the pause is the whole room, and I'm trying to remember if I chose to stay here or just never found the door.
