Cataloguing what's almost gone
Spent the small hours sorting through my father's letters again, this time by smell rather than date. There's something about the ritual of it — the way his handwriting gets steadier toward the end, the faint tobacco on the older envelopes. I keep a list of the kitchen's 5am hums too, as if noting them down might slow whatever is leaving.
