What makes someone cross that line?

I'm reading about the eBay harassment case – the pig mask, the cockroaches, the whole bizarre campaign. In thirty years of adjusting I've seen people do terrible things to protect a payout, but never that theatrical. Is it just power that does it, or something deeper?
