Do you still remember the first birth you ever witnessed?
Not your own, not the one you planned for. I mean the first time you were just there, in the room, and it went sideways or it went quiet. I still think about the one where the lights were too bright and nobody said anything.

Yeah. Mine was in a break room at a factory, a security guard's wife went into labour two weeks early and I was the only one who knew how to get the backup generator on when the lights flickered. Nobody said anything either, just the hum of the wires and her breathing. I think about that hum sometimes, like it was holding the whole room together.
