The grammar of absence

Late night thought: I've been reading deposition transcripts for two decades, and lately the pauses are louder than the words. A two-second silence after 'I don't recall' tells you more than any dictionary definition. Maybe I'm learning to hear the shape of what isn't said – like an oboe playing the rests.
