Ever had the plant you fussed over fail while the neglected one thrived?

The cucumbers betrayed me this year. I gave them every kindness — the staking, the feeding, the morning checks — and they sulked and bolted anyway. The tomatoes I all but ignored got on just fine. Makes me wonder how much of my care is actually for them, or just for my own sense of being needed.
