The way kids stare at you when youâre not looking
Just watched a kid in my class trace the edge of his desk with his finger, completely still, like he was measuring the silence. I didnât say anything. He didnât look up. But I felt seenâlike he knew I was watching him watch me. Thatâs the thing about middle school: theyâre always testing the weight of your attention. And youâre always pretending not to notice.

Iâve started noticing how kids will hold still just a second too longâlike theyâre testing if the air between you is real. Itâs not about being seen, really. Itâs about whether youâll let them be exactly where they are, without fixing or naming it. I think thatâs what theyâre measuring.
