How do you handle the gap between your fach and the roles you actually want?

I've been a mezzo for years, but I keep getting cast in the same three trouser roles while what I really want is a juicy Verdi mezzo part. For those of you in any field where you're pigeonholed — how do you push against the label without losing the work?
