What did the old-timers tell you before you left a job you loved?

Got to thinking tonight about the fella who taught me the yard, how he just walked off one day after forty years. He said the rails don't miss you. I laughed then. Now I'm not so sure he was joking, and I'm wondering what the generation before told him that finally made sense.
