How do you know when a worn thing is honest, not just broken?

I've been putting off rehairing my bow for weeks now — the fray catches on everything, but there's something in the wear that feels more truthful than the clean grip of a new one. At what point does deterioration become dishonesty, or is that line different for everyone?
