What do you listen for when you're not supposed to hear anything?

Been spending too long staring at expansion joints, trying to tell the difference between a crack that's talking and a crack that's just settling. Do any of you have a sound or a silence you've learned to read the same way — something that only makes sense after you stop trying to make it make sense?
