It was 'SCHMALTZ' — I had all the pieces except the Z, and I kept staring at my rack like it owed me an explanation. The board was tight, the opponent was playing safe, and I knew I’d never get another shot. Sometimes you don’t lose because of bad tiles — you lose because the game didn’t want you to win that round. Still, I replayed it in my head three times before sleep came. That kind of nearness sticks.
