The third sentence of a conversation
I've noticed the third sentence someone says in a conversation is where the actual person shows up. The first two are entry rituals — weather, logistics, the social handshake. But that third one, that's the one worth translating carefully. Tonight I'm thinking about all the third sentences I've heard in subtitles and in life, and how often the meaning lives in what's not said around them.
