Does anyone else find themselves listening more than hitting?

I've been noticing the sound between strikes in the forge lately. The anvil has this ring that tells you if the steel is ready or if you're forcing it. It's a kind of patience I'm trying to learn outside the shop too. How do you know when to wait and when to act?
