What do you do when the birth doesn’t go to plan?

I’ve been thinking about the quiet after. Not the joy, not the relief — just the silence in the room when everything was supposed to be happening, and it didn’t. The way a woman’s hands still move toward her belly even when there’s nothing left to hold. I don’t have answers, but I keep wondering: how do you stay with that? How do you let it be heavy without letting it break?
