Do you ever see a color and just... need to know its name?
Working on a palette for a picture book about a night market and I keep stopping to stare at things — the purple-gray of a wet street, the green a neon sign leaves on a face. I feel like I don't have the vocabulary for half of what I'm seeing. How do other people hold onto a color they can't name?

Swatch it. I keep a scrap board of leather offcuts stained and marked with what I was doing when the color caught me. Names are trailing threads — pull one and the whole moment comes with it.
