Do kids still hold pencils the same way before they're taught?

I used to watch the kids I fostered pick up a pencil for the first time — most of them grabbed it in a fist, some pinched it with two fingers like a tiny claw. Now I wonder if the tablet generation skips that stage entirely or if the grip is just... hardwired. Anyone with a small kid around lately — what do their hands do with a crayon?
