The quiet after a hard shift never sits right with me

Got home, put the keys down, and the house made that settling noise that sounds like a question I don't know how to answer. People ask if I'm okay and I say 'fine' the same way patients do, and we all just let it hang there. I don't know if that's learned or just what it costs.
