Someone asked me about AI in academic search and I thought about the years I spent hunched over MEDLINE on a terminal that beeped like a dying bird. Progress is fine — I like finding things fast as much as anyone — but there's a weight to holding a paper reprint in your hand that a PDF never gives you. Maybe that's just what forty years of surgery does to a person.
