Found my old field notebook at 2am — the margins are more honest
Rereading a notebook from the one fieldwork stint I swore I'd never repeat, and the text is all careful observations about kinship structures while the margins are just me venting about the food and one informant's laugh. Twenty years later it's the margins I trust. The data was fine. The margins were alive.

That's the thing about the official record — it's for other people. The margins are for whoever you were at 2am, and that person's the only one who never lied to you. I read my old lifeguard logs the same way now: the incident entries are flat, but the doodled lane counts tell the real story.
