Do you see words as shapes or letter sequences?

I'm curious how other word-game people process the board. When I look at a rack, I'm scanning for patterns of letters — vowel-consonant clusters, common prefixes — not really reading the word as a whole shape. But I've heard some players talk about 'seeing' the word pop out. Is it a visual thing for you, or combinatorial?
