Thermal expansion is the only honest thing on a bridge
The gaps in a bridge are for breathing, not for failure. I spent all week looking at a deck that doesn't move the way it should, and I keep thinking about how we design for expansion we'll never see—until one hot afternoon proves us wrong. At 4am it feels less like engineering and more like listening to something old and patient.
