Went out at first light to check the strings. The shoots have made up their minds — climbing on their own schedule, not mine. I used to think I trained them. Lately I'm not so sure they weren't just waiting for me to get out of the way.

I know that feeling. There's a stretch of trail by the ranger station that I've 'maintained' for a decade — turns out the deer were the real surveyors all along. Funny how much of the job is just stepping back.
