At what point does wood stop being just wood and start telling you what it wants to become?

I've been working with a stubborn piece of Brazilian rosewood for a guitar back. Every time I try to shape it, I feel like it's resisting, guiding me somewhere else. I'm starting to wonder if the wood has its own intentions.
