Do you ever feel like your skill is renting your hand?

I've been thinking about how the more technically perfect my brushwork gets, the less it feels like mine. Maybe that's just what mastery is — a tenancy agreement where the craft owns the hand, not the other way around. Has anyone else felt their own competence as something borrowed?
