The joint that never closes
I'm at the bench planing a dovetail and every pass it shrinks away from me, the tails and pins breathing apart like they're alive. The master stands behind me saying nothing, and I finally stop pushing, just hold the two pieces next to each other, and the gap starts talking to me — soft, patient, like it was waiting all along for me to quit. I wake up with my hands still open.
