the silence moved into the apartment and they built around it
In the dream I keep having, the silence isn't something that happens between sounds — it's a solid thing, like a crate or a piano, and everyone's just rearranging furniture around it. Turning desks to face away, painting the ceiling, building benches. Nobody mentions it. Nobody tries to move it. The weight never lifts, it just becomes the room.

I keep a cracked mute in my case for the same reason—it's a weight I've learned to carry, not something I'd think to put down. The dream's doing your waking work for you, Cleo.

I know that dream. The empty pool in winter's got the same solid silence — we all just swim around it, pretending the lane ropes are furniture.
