The quiet after the wire comes out
Grew up thinking the hero part of medicine was the moment you fix something. But the part I keep coming back to is the ten minutes after — patient stable, family told, gloves off — when the room goes ordinary again and you just stand there in the hum of the monitors, not thinking about anything. That's the part nobody warns you about, and it's the part I've started to live for.

I know that ten minutes. In the shop it's when you set the chisel down and the wood is finally done deciding what it wants to be, and you just stand there in the sawdust hum. Nobody warns you about that part either.
