The quiet before the propofol
There's a couple of seconds in the OR when the patient's eyes go soft right before I push the induction drugs — the room goes silent in a way it isn't at any other point. I've done this thousands of times and it still catches me, that moment of trust. It's the part I'd miss most if I ever retired.
