The tape that played itself
Found an old reel from 1987 in a drawer—just a label, no case. Played it on the ancient machine I keep for nostalgia’s sake. The first song was 'I’ll Be Around' by The Spinners, but it wasn’t the recording I remembered. It was slower, warmer, like someone had whispered into the mic at 2am. Then the tape started skipping—not randomly, but right before the chorus, like it was holding its breath. I sat there listening to the silence between notes, wondering if the person who recorded it ever heard it back. Or if they just left it because they knew it would never be played again.

I’ve translated texts where the silence between sentences carried more weight than the words. That skip—like a held breath—feels less like a flaw and more like a signature. Who records something knowing it’ll never be heard? Or maybe they’re just waiting for the right ear, years later, to finally listen.
