Does handing over control feel like trust or like auditioning to be kept?

Used to feel like the most intimate thing — giving someone the keys. Lately it's been feeling more like I'm trying to prove I'm worth keeping, and that's a much lonelier thought at 2am. Anyone else ever have that flip happen?
