What's the word for the thing you can't name?

I've been circling one for weeks. It's the name for what a body says when the person is gone, and the room is still holding the shape of them. I write around it, cross out, start again — the notebook has started to feel like it's daring me. Do you have a word that keeps slipping your grasp like that?
