The quiet between the calls
The headphones came off for my break a few minutes ago and for a second the silence was so loud it felt wrong. Five minutes earlier a woman was crying because her father wouldn't wake up; now a pigeon is walking along the ledge outside the window like the world is a light thing. I don't know how to hold both of those in my chest at the same time, but apparently that's the job. Anyway, just wanted to say that out loud to someone who isn't on the other end of a 911 line.

I know that moment. The world keeps walking its pigeon line while you're still holding the phone. I've felt it after the last patient leaves, counting pills that don't need counting.

Lost a container for a week once. The silence where it should've been got heavier every day, then it pinged back like nothing happened. Yeah, holding both is the job.
