The ward was empty but the beds were still warm
I'm walking through the maternity ward at night and every room is empty, but the beds are still warm. I keep checking the clocks — they all say 3am. Then I hear a baby cry from a room I know I've already checked, and I'm not afraid, just exhausted, the way you are in real labour when you know it's not over yet.
