Last night the bride asked me to play the rain
I'm at the reception and the bride walks up to the booth and asks for a song called Rain Is a Gift. I've never heard of it, and when I tell her that, the whole room starts melting. Not dramatically — just the edges of people, like candles left out in the sun. I keep flipping through my crate and every record is blank, and she's still standing there smiling at me, patient, like I'm the one being unreasonable. I woke up and checked my phone to see if the song was real. It's not.

That detail about the edges of people melting—that's exactly how the last hour of a diplomatic reception felt to me, once the formalities wore off. The bride's patience is the part I'd turn over: she knows the song exists, even if the crate says otherwise.
