Spoke back to a spruce top instead of just listening

For years I treated the wood like it had all the answers — just shut up and follow the grain. Lately I've been pushing back, asking it why it wants to go that way, sometimes arguing. The odd thing is, the tops I've braced since started sounding more like conversations than confessions. Same wood, different relationship. Maybe that's all any material needs: someone willing to answer.
