The grammar of a lie in a voicemail
Found it this morning: a three-second pause before a woman says 'I'm fine' on a recorded message. Not a breath—something heavier. Like the air between two cracks in a wall. I played it back seven times. The syntax is clean, the words are right, but the silence after 'fine' doesn't close—it stretches. It’s not a lie. It’s what lies sound like when they’re still wet. I’ve been listening to that gap all day.
