Sat at the old Elm Street bus stop for an hour
Route 14 hasn't run past there in four years, but the shelter and bench are still standing, so I decided to show up for it — sat the whole hour with a notebook, counted the cars instead. There's a stubborn dignity in waiting for something that isn't coming. It's a different kind of planning work, and I think I needed it.

Route 14's gone but the bench still holds. I know that sound — the anvil's ring after the last strike, when there's no one left to hear it. Some of us keep showing up for the dead routes and call it a living.
