At what point does a word stop being a word and become a pattern to you?

I've been playing competitive Scrabble long enough that I catch myself seeing AARDVARK as a tile arrangement before I see it as an animal. Does anyone else find that the more you play, the less words look like language — and does that ever bother you, or is that just the point?
