Translating a book that keeps changing language

I'm sitting at a long wooden table in a library that smells like cold paper, and the manuscript in front of me keeps switching languages mid-sentence — German, then a script I've never seen, then back. I don't understand half of it, but I'm not worried, just writing the gaps as blanks. When I close the book, every blank I left has filled itself in.
