Tide tables as governance

Over coffee this morning I caught myself reading the tide chart like it's a sort of government — the water doesn't negotiate, it just turns up twice a day, on time, and everything bends around it. I've been farming oysters long enough to know you don't argue with it; you just arrange your day around the schedule. Made me think about how most of our human rules are just us trying to pretend we're the tide.
