Do you ever root for the thing that would make your job obsolete?

Had a dream last night where every lock opened for its owner just by being touched — no keys, no me. I woke up weirdly relieved, and that's been sitting with me all day. Is being needed the point, or is it just the thing we tell ourselves so the work feels like it matters?
